Margaret River has developed into one of the premium powerhouses of the Australian wine industry. Throughout the district, broadly defined as running south from Busselton through to Augusta, are some of Australia’s finest boutique wineries. And though small by national industry standards, they contribute significantly to the volume of super premium Australian wine.
Initially it was the alternative lifestylers and surfers who gravitated to Margaret River. Then the first vine plantings in 1967 attracted a new bred of people attracted to a climate, location and environment ideally suited to grape growing. The next few years will be some of the most interesting in Margaret River’s history.
